Witness the largest migration of animal biomass, as various forms of plankton, larval marine life and other fascinating organisms migrate from the mesopelagic zone in the ocean’s dark depths to the surface to feed during the night. This offers us the ability to see an extraordinary array of unique and often alien-looking pelagic lifeforms that are otherwise far beyond the reach of scuba diving limits.
This is NOT a regular night dive, this is like being in OUTERSPACE! If you’re planning to dive in the daytime in Cozumel, we can combine it.
Blackwater diving is a night dive in an open ocean, away from a reef, over deep water. We aim for 3 kilometers away from the shore, where the sea floor is over 300 meters / 1000 feet deep. This means we’re diving with no visual references, other than the lights below our boat.
- Marine park fees.
- Taxi ride from the ferry terminal to FONATUR and back
- Equipment (mask, regulator, wetsuit, BCD, fins, flashlight).
- Boat with filled air tanks and weights.
- Drinking water and snack.
- Professional guide instructor.
- Blackwater dives are possible year-round, but the weather can be a limiting factor. We use a large boat that can comfortably operate in waves up to 2m in height. For an enjoyable dive, we aim for 1.8m or less with the most up-to-date weather forecast. So if you plan on a blackwater dive during your stay on Cozumel, please be extremely flexible with dates for the dive.
- 27ºC- 29ºC (81ºF-84Fº)
- Advanced divers or divers with previous night diving experience. Good buoyancy is a must.
- Meeting point: At 3:30 pm we meet at the ferry station to cross to Cozumel.
- Ferry ride: A great 45-minute ride to get to the island.
- Take a taxi: Once we arrive on the island, we take a taxi to go to the FONATUR marina.
- Boat: Once here, we’ll get our equipment ready with tanks and weights.
- Briefing: You will be provided with full information on the rules and dive plan.
- Let’s dive! We aim to be in the water at the drop site 1.5-2 hours after sunset. We’ll have ONE DIVE with a time between 45 to 90 minutes. Water and snacks on the boat.
- After the dive, we take a taxi back downtown where, depending on your plan, you can decide to go back to Playa del Carmen or stay on the island and explore it (which is totally worth it!)
- Ferry tickets
- Nitrox, available at an extra cost on request (certified nitrox divers only).
- Boat crew tips (not mandatory, optional if you feel they provided excellent service).
